Changes to Windscreen Repair Industry Code of Practice (BS AU 242b:2022)

As we previously mentioned, there have been some changes to the Windscreen Repair Industry Code of Practice (BS AU 242b:2002). This email sets out the changes to the repair zones and sites that can be safely repaired.

Repair Zones and Sizes

Previously the screen was divided into 4 zones – A, B, C and D. Damage up to 10mm, 15mm, 25mm and 40mm could be repaired in each zone respectively. Going forward, this will be simplified to 2 zones – A and B (see diagram below) and damage of 20mm and 40mm respectively can be repaired. Any damage post repair to be “invisible or barely detectable which is less than 10mm” which brings the Code of Practice in line with the MOT test standards.

Cracks up to 150mm will continue to be allowable under the standard, provided it does not encroach on Zone A.

Repairs in front of windscreen technology

The new standard recommends that no repairs be conducted which may interfere with the safe operation of windscreen technology and safety features, such as ADAS cameras. For this reason, a black hatched area is drawn around a sample multi- camera set up on the diagram above.

However, this technology is changing rapidly, and new models and camera arrays are being introduced. To that end, technicians and repair organisations should consider a process for reviewing vehicle manufacturers guidance or assessing where on screens technology will be a factor.

Our final instalment will set out details of how records are to be kept and also training and competency of repairers.

There is a one year transition period, meaning that companies have until March 2023 to ensure they are compliant.
