Changes to Windscreen Repair Industry Code of Practice (BS AU 242b:2022)

Over the past 2 years, the British Standards Institute (BSI) has conducted a review of the standards that cover windscreen repair processes. This review will see the Code of Practice governing windscreen repairs updated from BS AU 242a:1998 to the newly revised BS AU 242b:2022, effective 31 March 2022. There will be a one-year transition period, meaning the two standards will run in parallel until 31 March 2023. The main purpose of the review was to incorporate ADAS and camera technology into the repair zones, as well as to focus on training requirements.

BS AU 242b:2022 is a voluntary Code of Practice that sets out suggested procedures and guidelines for technicians performing windscreen repairs. It outlines the suggested industry practice in a number of areas – competency, repair zones and sizes, repair practices and record keeping.

This update is not exhaustive but aims to highlight the key changes that will impact those performing repairs. It is recommended that technicians and repair organisations familiarise themselves with the new standard. All Esprit products, training and manuals will be updated to ensure compliance.

The major changes were:

  1. Reduce the number of repair zones and amend the suggested repair sizes
  2. Restrict repairs in front of windscreen technology (e.g., ADAS, HUD)
  3. Increase the record keeping and management processes of repair organisations
  4. Formalise training requirements for technicians – particularly a refresher to account for the updated measures within the revised Code of Practice.

It is important for you to be aware:

  1. Esprit have updated training materials/ repair templates to show the new repair zones and the updated versions will be marked with the new reference BS AU 242b:2022.
  2. Esprit equipment, resin and trained repair processes remain compliant with the new Code of Practice.
  3. Esprit recently become IMI accredited and our training will ensure your technicians meet the definitions of competency within the new Code of Practice. We can also offer online refresher courses to ensure formal training has taken place at regular intervals.

Over the coming weeks we’ll be setting out the detail of the technical updates in easy to follow parts. If you have any questions about any of the information that you read here, please contact us.
