How to keep your car corrosion free between rust proofing treatments
A kit is defined as a a set supplies for a specific purpose. In the case of rust proofing kits, they contain all the products needed to treat signs of corrosion and protect against rust. The benefit to anyone wanting to rust proof their own vehicle is that a lot of the stress is taken out of shopping for each product and quantity needed to get the job done. Rust proofing kits are designed for different vehicle sizes and age.
Before doing your own DIY rust proofing it is essential you first get your vehicle squeaky clean - including the chassis. When thoroughly dry you should then mask up parts that you don't want to spray such as exhaust, brakes, electrics and radiator. You may also require a wire brush to remove any loose material to get to the solid base metal.
Planning and preparation are key to a successful outcome.
Tips shared by Dinitrol DIY rust proofing customers when they took on the job themselves:
- Dinitrol is not too messy when being applied however it is still worth laying down a protective covering such as large sheets of cardboard or plastic underneath your car and wearing protective clothing
- Take all the arch liners off, cleaned out front wing areas where sludge builds up, seats out, carpet up, sill covers etc lifted
- Get car up on axle stands and thoroughly clean the whole underside using very hot water and scrubbing brushes/hose etc.
- Treat all signs of rust with the Dinitrol rust converter RC900
- Apply Dinitrol cavity wax into all box sections, sills, doors and other cavities using an injection pipe or extension nozzle. Inject into internal bodywork and chassis cavities. injection pipes or lances are for cavity wax applications only.
- If you are treating a classic Mazda MX5, then "If you remove the rear arch liners you will see a rubber bung and screw hole which gives access to the sills, but with the Dinitrol extension tube you can reach this point from the holes when the scuff strip is removed."
- Finally, apply underbody was to the underside, arches, chassis rails, sub frame etc. One customer he applied underbody rust protection wax section by section over the course of several weekends. Also apply a thin coat of the cavity wax to the underside of the vehicle.
- Thoroughly recommend using goggles, a mask, gloves and the shower cap.
Rust proofing an old or classic car will give years of protection however, a quick peek to the undercarriage once a year thereafter should be done and a top-up coating applied if necessary. Modern cars are generally well rustproofed but not to the point of excluding extra treatment in some cases.
It is the underbody to vehicles, affected by rain, mud and any corrosive substances that is st
ill worth an extra top-up treatment before any seam/surface rot sets in.
Before applying a top-up coating, give your car a degreasing and gentle pressure wash. Then leave for a few days to dry after cleaning. The DIY Dinitrol rust proofing top up pack is ideal if you have previously treated your vehicle using a rust proofing kit.
For the litres kits, a compressor providing 6 Bar or 90psi operating pressure and 4 CFM (cubic foot per minute) will be required to apply this product.
The rust proofing top-up kit includes the following two products:
- DINITROL Cavity wax will not crack, chip or peel. The product is particularly suitable for use on old vehicles where corrosion is evident, such as the underbody. Drip free application. Dries to leave a brown, hard, waxy film. Spraying a thin coat of cavity wax prior to applying the underbody coating softens up any existing coating that may be present and helps with the adhesion of the underbody or stone chip coating. Cavity waxes also contain rust inhibitors.
- DINITROL underbody wax - a rust preventive coating which provides long term resistance against corrosion and abrasion, even under extreme conditions - combats the highly corrosive effects of road salt and abrasion.. Dries to leave a tough elastic waxy protective coating. DINITROL 4941 is a superior self-healing product which will not dry out or flake off. When applied hot to a clean, dry surface, it adheres to both painted surfaces and those coated with a layer of PVC or similar material. Zinc, rubber and plastics are completely unharmed by the product.
